Police probing a street stabbing in Hartlepool have made two new arrests - with a man in custody on suspicion of attempted murder.

Police were called to Sheriff Street in the town at 2.15pm on Tuesday after reports a male was knifed in the street.

The 44-year-old victim is currently being treated at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.

His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

The Great North Air Ambulance was called to the scene and landed nearby, but was not needed to transfer the casualty to hospital.

A 32-year-old man remains in custody on suspicion of attempted murder, while a 33-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Three males, aged 22, 23 and 47, who were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder yesterday have been released on bail pending further inquiries.
