An attacker who held captive and raped a prostitute after calling her to his home for sex has been jailed for 13 years.

Johnny Corbett kept the terrified sex worker imprisoned for four hours, convinced her he had a gun and warned he had killed people before.

Newcastle Crown Court heard the 42-year-old, who is "obsessed" with sex, took the woman's phone to stop her calling for help during the prolonged attack and left her believing she was about to die.

During the terrifying ordeal the victim was raped, repeatedly threatened and ordered to carry out sex acts.

The terrified mum only managed to escape when Corbett left the room after she claimed to take ill, which gave her a chance to barricade herself in and call 999 from a secret, second mobile phone she was carrying.

Corbett, of The Avenue, Hetton, who has a previous conviction for a sex attack 20 years ago and has a history of offences against women, denied two charges of rape and one of false imprisonment.

He was convicted by a jury after a trial, where the victim had to re-live her ordeal from the witness box.

Judge Deborah Sherwin said Corbett poses a risk to the public and sentenced him to 13 years behind bars with an extended five year licence period.

The judge told him: "During the course of what took place you told her you had a gun and you had killed people in the past.

"You told her you were kidnapping her. She was terrified.

"You took her phone so she couldn't get help but you didn't realise she had a second phone.

"She says she thought at the time that you were going to kill her. She was detained against her wishes and the incident lasted four hours.

"You made serious threats of violence towards her that you knew she took seriously .

"You are obsessed with sex but have no ability to control those desires or appreciate the effect they have on other people.

"You are a dangerous offender."

The judge said she was convinced Corbett poses an "extremely high risk" of re-offending.

The court heard the attack happened on January 4 when Corbett made arrangements for the woman to come to his home to "provide him with sexual services".

It was when the sex worker asked for her £60 fee on arrival she was pushed to the floor and the shocking attack got underway.

The court heard Corbett is not suffering from a psychotic illness but has multiple personality disorders.

He repeatedly protested his innocence from the dock at the sentencing hearing and has told probation officials he "might not be responsible for his actions" if he bumped into the victim again.

As well as serving the extended prison term, Corbett must sign the sex offenders register for life and abide by a sexual harm prevention order which bans him from being in the company of prostitutes or escorts.

Shaun Routledge, defending, said the gun claim was an "empty threat" and the offence was unplanned.

Mr Routledge said Corbett's life has been blighted by problems for many years.
