A SKULL which was discovered in woodland has been identified by police.

A SKULL which was discovered in woodland has been identified by police.

Cleveland Police say it is that of a 31-year-old man who went missing in 2012.

Officers are not releasing the name of the man to lessen the distress to the man’s family.

His disappearance was investigated by Durham Constabulary in 2012.

The man’s death is not being treated as suspicious, say police.

The grim discovery at woodland near Wynyard was made on Wednesday, December 11, by a workman on the site, which has been designated for housing.

Five pieces of vertebrae were also later found near to where the skull was uncovered.

Police say there was no signs that the man had been the victim of any attack.

A Cleveland Police spokesman said: “Officers believe there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding how the skull and other bones came to be at this location and next of kin have been informed of this update.”
