A DERELICT social club has been hit by fire for the second time in the space of a week.
Five fire crews and an aerial ladder platform were called to the former British Legion pub in Ellison Road, Peterlee.
Firefighters spent two-and-a-half hours tackling the flames from 6.30pm on Monday.
The same club, previously known as Peterlee Sports and Social Club, which has been empty for about eight months was targeted by suspected arsonists around the same time on Monday of last week.
A Peterlee Fire Station spokesman said: “We had a fire there last week.
“This time the fire was well-alight.
“There was quite a lot of fire damage and smoke damage and police are going to make the building secure.
“The fire was on the second floor of the two-storey building and we initially tackled it from the outside, but when it was safe to do so, breathing apparatus-wearing crew went in to damp down.”
Windows had been smashed before last week’s fire.
