Police officers searched the West View area of Hartlepool following alleged fake reports that someone was lying injured following an assault.

A 16-YEAR-OLD boy has been charged with wasting police time after allegedly sparking a search which saw the force helicopter launched to hunt for an injured person in Hartlepool.

Officers from Cleveland Police feared that a person could have been lying injured in the West View area of town after receiving a report that someone had been attacked at around 11pm on Wednesday, May 28.

Officers on foot were sent to the scene to look for a victim in the area of the cemetery in Old Cemetery Road and towards the town’s Brus Tunnel.

And this morning, as the weather improved, the force helicopter was launched as police continued searching and carried out house-to-house inquiries.

The search was called off at noon and a 16-year-old boy – who was initially arrested on suspicion of assault – was charged with wasting police time.

He is due to appear in the youth court at Teesside Magistrates’ Court next month.
