TWO people have appeared in court charged with a sex attack on a young girl.

Lewis Bates, 18, from Runciman Road, in Hartlepool, and a 17-year-old town youth, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at Peterlee Magistrates’ Court both charged with three counts of rape.

The pair did not enter a plea to the allegations and were both remanded in custody until they appear at Durham Crown Court on September 12.

They were arrested in Easington on suspicion of serious sexual offences on the afternoon of Bank Holiday Monday along with three other Hartlepool males aged 17 to 27 after a teenage girl was allegedly attacked in Blackhall.

Two of the men were bailed without charge on Monday night pending further inquiries until the end of September.

The second 17-year-old youth, who has not been charged, has been bailed until early September.
