POLICE are warning residents to not fall victim to a scam.
Detectives say letters are being sent to homes from a man calling himself Mr Hua Ong, claiming to be representing Public Bank (Hong Kong) and informing the victim that they have inherited a large sum of money.
The letter writer goes on to suggest that the cash is split between the potential victim and Mr Ong, who then goes on to request that the recipient does not tell anyone about receiving the letter.
Detective Sergeant Dave Clough, of Cleveland Police’s Force Intelligence Bureau, said: “Please don’t fall victim to scams like this. If something sounds too good to be true, it generally is.
“My advice is to never part with money when you receive letters like this.”
