Detectives are appealing for witnesses in relation to a robbery at Johnny Ridley’s bookmakers in Wingate last Wednesday.

It happened at around half-past three in the afternoon of the 19th August when a man wearing what appeared to be blue overalls or a paper suit entered the shop on North Road.

He threatened the cashier with a yellow-handled axe he was carrying and made off with more than £3,000 before fleeing the scene in a grey car.

Following enquiries in the area, a 29-year-old man from Station Town was subsequently arrested on suspicion of robbery. He is currently on police bail while enquiries continue.

Temporary Det Sgt Tony Elliott said: “There were no customers in the premises at the time but we understand the main street outside was really busy. We would be keen to hear from anyone who saw this man as he left the shop or got into the car.”

Anyone with information can call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
