MINDLESS yobs caused £1,200 worth of damage to a noticeboard at Hartlepool’s North Cemetery.

The vandals damaged the notice board erected next to the Chester Road entrance and members of the Friends of North Cemetery group are now appealing for witnesses.

Secretary Julie Rudge said: “The vandals would appear to have used a knife or some other sharp implement to cut away the Perspex cover, causing a lot of damage to the noticeboard itself.”

The noticeboard was funded with National Lottery money which also paid for new decorative gates at the cemetery. The intention was to use it to post information about the cemetery’s history and ecology.

Group chair Jane Shaw added: “The group’s sole purpose is to improve the cemetery for everyone and it is soul-destroying when mindless acts committed by a minority threaten to ruin the enjoyment of the majority.

Anyone with information should contact PC Hart at Hartlepool Police on 101.
