Details have been released of a man killed at a railway crossing in Billingham

A MAN who was killed after being struck by a train was from the Billingham area.

Emergency services were called to a level crossing near Cowpen Bewley at around 9.30pm on Tuesday.

The victim, aged 42, who has not been named, was from the Billingham area.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: “British Transport Police officers were called to the railway line near Cowpen Lane Crossing in Cowpen Bewley in Billingham on Tuesday, 11 March, after receiving a report at 9.30pm of a man being hit by a train.

“Officers attended the incident alongside colleagues from Cleveland Police and North East Ambulance service but the man, aged 42 and from the Billingham area, was declared dead at scene.

“The incident is not being treated as non-suspicious and officers are currently working to determine the circumstances surrounding the mans death, inform his next of kin and prepare a report for the coroner.”

The line was closed for around 90 minutes after the incident involving the 8.30pm Newcastle to Middlesbrough service.
