A DIAMOND couple from Hartlepool have celebrated 60 years of happy marriage.
Betty and Jim McGill, both 82, celebrated reaching the milestone with a slap-up meal and a surprise trip to Whitby.
And the secret to their longevity is trust, love and friendship.
Betty and Jim, who live in the West View area of Hartlepool, also received a card from The Queen.
Jim, who served in the British Army for five years, said: “We, like everybody else, have had our ups and downs but you get on with live and we both love each very much,” added Jim, who also worked for a water company.
Betty used to work at John Collier’s clothing factory and the pair, who wed on July 25, 1953 at the former St Barnabas’s Church, have three children Christine Cooper, 57, Barbara Harrison, 56 and 54-year-old Kevin McGill.
They also have eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Christine said: “60 years is a remarkable achievement.”
