Dog dies in allotment fire

A DOG died after a shed fire at an allotment site.

Crews from Peterlee Fire Station were called to an allotment site off Market Crescent, in Wingate, after reports of a shed on fire.

When the fire, which badly damaged the shed, had been put out firefighters found the remains of a dog.

Despite a search of the area and contacting other allotment holders, fire chiefs say they have been unable to trace its owner.

It is not known whether the animal was kept on the allotment or whether it had wandered on to the site.

The cause of the blaze is subject to an investigation.

The fire took place at about 7pm on Wednesday.
