SHOPPING centre visitors are encouraged not to forget about supporting schools taking part in an annual scheme when they break for summer.

The school holidays will soon be upon us – but the collecting in the Mail-backed Shop for Schools continues.

St Aidan’s Primary School are still leading the way as the most supported school in the scheme.

But there is still lots of time to help your favourite school to benefit from valuable new equipment.

Suzanne Chaney, Middleton Grange Shopping Centre’s marketing and retail liaison manager, said: “The initiative has been getting more support from shoppers in the last couple of months.

“But we still want to reach out and get more people to participate, especially when the schools have broken up.”

Shop for School banners and leaflets have been delivered to 15 town schools to help spread the word.

The scheme will draw to a close for another year on August 31.

Shop for Schools works by turning every pound spent in Middleton Grange into a one point voucher.

Just take your receipts to the complex’s information desk for them to be converted.

They will then be stamped and turned into tokens which can be immediately placed in one of 24 boxes marked with each participating school or nursery’s name.

Every pound spent on a Sunday is worth double points and treble on August bank holiday.

In the years the scheme has been running, tens of thousands of pounds worth of goods and equipment have been donated to dozens of schools across Hartlepool and East Durham.

They cover everything from book collections and microscopes, to rounders sets and high-tech equipment such as laptop computers.

Schools’ point scores are calculated by dividing them by the number of pupils in the school to ensure fairness regardless of its size.

And watch out in the Mail as we print regular bonus points tokens to help your chosen school fly up the league table.
