ARMED police sealed off a town centre street for around an hour following reports that a man had a gun in a house.

St Paul’s Road, off Grange Road in Hartlepool, was closed to the public from around 7.30pm after officers answered a report that a man had a firearm.

But the area was re-opened once it emerged that there was no weapon present.

The man was arrested under the Mental Health Act and taken into protective custody.

Residents said up to six police vehicles, including four cars and two vans, along with Cleveland Police’s helicopter were sent to the incident.

A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: “There was a report of a male with a firearm in St Paul’s Road.

“However it transpired that there was no weapon and the man was taken into protective custody so he could be assessed under the Mental Health Act.

“The armed response unit were involved, however, the incident was brought to a peaceful conclusion after no firearm was found.”
