PATIENTS in a hurry can pick up their prescriptions in an instant after a new pharmacy with a drive-through pick up point opened.
The quick collection window, the first one in the region, is one of a number of innovative features of The Pharmacy which is part of the purpose built Abbey Health Centre in Billingham.
The Pharmacy is the brain-child of Sanjai Ahitan, director and superintendent pharmacist of Billingham Health Ltd.
Mr Ahitan, who has more than 25 years of experience as a pharmacist, said: “It offers convenience, for example if a patient is disabled, ill or has young children in the car.
“You can simply drive up to the window and have your prescription dispensed. The benefits of a drive-through pharmacy can help in many situations.
“It’s been very exciting to be part of this project in Billingham and I wish to congratulate the doctors involved in the development of this state-of-the art health facility.”
Colour-coded medicine packs and a repeat prescription management service are among other innovations at the new pharmacy on Finchale Avenue.
Mr Ahitan played a key role in designing the layout of the pharmacy after being involved in the project since its early days.
He added: “It was important to achieve as much space as possible.
“I wanted an environment where you don’t feel cramped. The customers want a facility that is fresh and pleasant to be in.
“We intend to provide an environment that promotes health and deals with medical matters.”
The pharmacy also has a consultation room where people can get diabetes testing, blood pressure measurements, Body Mass Index testing (BMI), flu injections and other medical advice.
It serves all customers in the Billingham and surrounding areas regardless of which GP practice they are registered with.
The Pharmacy is open on Mondays to Fridays, from 7am to 10.30pm, on Saturdays, from 8am to 8pm and on Sundays, from 8.30am to 7pm.
