A DRIVER who led police on a late night chase through a Hartlepool neighbourhood has been fined £250 after a trial.
Brian Wallace, 23, was charged with dangerous driving after he failed to stop for police in two cars and a van.
Hartlepool Police sergeant Gary Cowan told the trial he could not keep up with Wallace in West View Road despite driving at 80mph.
But Wallace insisted he did not go above 45mph and said there were no other vehicles on the road or that anyone had to take any evasive action.
He made off from police in Davison Drive, West View Road, Easington Road and into Whin Crescent on September 10 last year.
Wallace said he was bleeding as a result of a domestic incident earlier and just panicked.
He jumped out of the Volkswagen Golf outside his parents’ house in the cul-de-sac and tried to avoid police by jumping over their garden fence.
Wallace was found not guilty of dangerous driving by the jury.
But he was convicted of the lesser offence of driving a vehicle on a public road without due care and attention.
As well as being fined, Wallace, of Taunton Grove, Hartlepool, was given five penalty points and ordered to pay a £15 surcharge.
