A fence post smashed through the windscreen of a car after it left the road in Hartlepool.

A male driver in his late 30s is today recovering in hospital after his black BMW M3 veered off the A179, near to the Tall Ships pub, at around 9.30 last night.

The car ended up at the back of nearby houses where it crashed into the fence post.

The driver was taken to James Cook University Hospital suffering a severe laceration to his arm and multiple fractures after a crew from Hartlepool Stranton worked alongside paramedics to treat him at the scene.

Crew manager Richie Carr said: “He was severely injured, but if the post had entered the windscreen closer to the steering wheel he could have been dead. The car had travelled quite some distance from the road.

“We stabilised him in the car and patched him up with paramedics before carrying him out.”

No one else was harmed in the incident.
