MOTORISTS are being warned to expect some disruption due to major improvement works to a roundabout on a key route in and out of Hartlepool.
The A179 Easington Road/Throston Grange Lane roundabout scheme was due to begin today and work is expected to last around seven weeks.
The improvements are part of an on-going programme to improve the bus network across the town.
The roundabout island is to be re-aligned to make it easier for two lanes of traffic to get around at the same time, the road around the roundabout is to be re-constructed and pedestrian crossing areas will be improved.
Traffic travelling into town on the A179 via Easington Road will be diverted along West View Road and Winterbottom Avenue, although traffic leaving Hartlepool on the A179 will still be able to use Easington Road. For homes and other properties adjacent to or near this temporary one-way out-of-town route along Easington Road, access will be maintained, but drivers will have to follow designated diversions.
A temporary closure will be put in place between the end of Holdforth Road and the roundabout.
However, access to the University Hospital of Hartlepool, the Merry-Go-Round pub and restaurant and other properties along this road will be maintained via Howbeck Lane, Wells Avenue and Winterbottom Avenue.
Access into Throston Grange Lane from the roundabout will not be possible during most of the works. But one-way access off Throston Grange Lane on to the roundabout will be maintained, as will access to and from the petrol station and Jesmond Gardens via Easington Road.
