SCHOOLCHILDREN are winners after a kind-hearted dad swapped four wheels for two legs to tackle one of the world’s most famous races.
Driving instructor Steve Howe, 46, completed yesterday’s Virgin Money London Marathon in four hours 23 minutes.
It was his fourth time in the iconic 26-mile event and may not have been his fastest – he finished in two hours 45 minutes in his younger years.
But the Seaton Carew resident, who is married to Angie, 41, said: “I was just happy to get round.”
Steve was sponsored in the race to raise money for sports equipment and playground furniture for the town’s St Teresa’s Primary School, where his children Sophie, 11, and Lewis, seven, are pupils.
Former Burn Road Harrier Steve, who was one of around 36,000 runners in the event and has completed 50 half-marathons, hopes to have raised at least £500 for the school.
Steve, who wore a vest emblazoned with the word ‘Hartlepool’ on his chest, said: “I’m a fun runner now, if I can get a bit of sponsorship, that’s good enough.”
Steve, who was home nursing aching muscles today, added: “The atmosphere was fantastic. I don’t think anyone does it better than London with the marathon.
“The crowds were great and the support was tremendous from strangers.”
He said his vest even attracted shouts of “Come on, Hartlepool!” and “Come on, Monkey-hanger!”
