AN HISTORIC pub is trying to drum up support for an annual chilly charity event.

The Cosmopolitan Hotel, in Durham Street, on Hartlepool’s Headland, has held a fancy dress Boxing Day Dip for the last 12 years.

Warm-hearted fundraisers brave the cold sea waters of the nearby Fish Sands dressed in their best fancy-dress attire to raise as much cash as possible for either Hartlepool and District Hospice or the Macmillan Nurses.

But last year, landlady Jane Fleming said the numbers of those taking part dwindled considerably.

And this year they are having an early drive to publicise the important and fun event

Jane, a mother and grandmother, said: “We’ve been here for nearly 12 years and we’ve done it every year.

“Last year there wasn’t that many people that turned up which we were disappointed about.

“We want to try to promote it really to try to keep the Headland Boxing Day Dip alive.

“We don’t know what time it will be held yet because it depends on the tide so we’ll decide that nearer the time but it’s usually around 10am to 11am on the Fish Sands.”

Jane said the biggest crowd they have seen braving the waters was 40, and the most ever raised has been about £400.

She added: “The first year was a really good turn-out with about 40 people but it’s got less and less and we don’t want that to happen.

“I know there’s one at Seaton every year but we get forgotten about a bit.

“We’re doing it for the Macmillan Nurses this year so it’s a really good cause.”
