Budding joiner Callum wins college award

A joinery student has been named the best trainee in the whole region after seeing off all competition from rival colleges.

Callum Newton, 18, from Peterlee, and who attends East Durham College, picked up a winner’s trophy at the finals held at New College Durham.

The competition saw Callum compete in a series of joinery challenges against students from nine other colleges from around the North-East.

Callum called winning the competition one of his proudest achievements and thanked college staff for helping him come out on top.

He said: “It’s really great to come out on top in a competition like this.

“I worked really hard to make sure I knew my stuff going into these finals and was prepared to put in the work to get a good score.

“A huge thanks must go to the staff at the College .”

Dominic Hunt, programme leader in carpentry and joinery at East Durham College, added: “This is a fantastic achievement for Callum and he has worked really hard to win this competition.

“He is a great student here at East Durham College and he always puts in maximum effort and this award is thoroughly deserved.”
