A COLLEGE’S groundbreaking partnership with a golf club is driving forwards.
Hartlepool College of Further Education started a golf academy a year ago in a bid to support the stars of the future.
The partnership between the Stockton Street college and Seaton Carew Golf Club is said to be the first of its kind in the North-East – and has so far seen around 10 students taking advantage of the scheme.
A new state-of-the-art practice area has now been opened at the Tees Road club that can be used by those in the academy.
Shaun Hope, head of sport at the college, said: “Those in the academy can play up to 11 hours a week and take advantage of expert advice, excellent facilities and support in areas such as nutrition and physiology.
“This is a prestigious club with lots of history and we are delighted to be in partnership with the club.
“The college is keen to not just form partnerships in sport, but in all areas.
“The success we have had with Seaton Carew Golf Club shows what can be achieved in working together.”
Mr Hope added that a “significant amount of money” has been put into the venture that aims to give those aged 19 or under and studying on a full-time course at the college, the chance to develop their sporting skills alongside a successful education.
Clifford Jackson, the club’s PGA professional, said: “It gives us the opportunity to work closely with the college and some of the finest young talent around.
“I think it sets them up for a brighter future.
“Even if that’s not in golf, they can still have the social life that comes with the sport.”
Mr Jackson said the new practice area is one of the largest in the North-East with a 300-yard, all-weather range.
The college is recruiting for new students to take part in the academy.
