Cleveland College of Art & Design (CCAD) has come out top in the region and fifth in the UK for graduates moving into new roles.

Results from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) national survey of recent graduates found the Hartlepool-based college also ranked as the joint top art college in the country with Ravensbourne in London.

Comparing its HESA submission with employability data from the annual Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) league table showed 96% of its 2014 graduates in work or further study six months after graduating, well above the national average of 89%.

Not only has the college out-performed all the regional universities, including Durham University, Northumbria University, Leeds College of Art, Teesside University and University of Sunderland, it also ranks joint fifth in the UK, beating prestigious names such as Oxford and Cambridge.

Compared with other specialist art and design providers, CCAD now ranks above higher profile institutions such as University of the Arts London and the Glasgow School of Art.

HESA’s annual league tables publish the results of all UK Higher Education Institutions (HEI) employability statistics. Results from institutions such as CCAD are not included as they are classed as Further Education institutions, with their degree provision validated externally but colleges are required to provide an official submission.

We have produced and continue to produce high calibre art and design graduates who are capable of competing at the highest level, securing roles in all facets of the creative industry and achieving entrepreneurial success.

Martin Raby, college principal, said: “It is clear from the results that smaller, specialist institutions such as Cleveland College of Art & Design are producing outstanding graduates and delivering quality results, as demonstrated by our data when compared with the DLHE table. We are now competing with nationally recognised universities and I believe is it because of our size and specialist creative environment

“We are delighted with this result and the recognition of the hard work undertaken by all our staff and students. We have produced and continue to produce high calibre art and design graduates who are capable of competing at the highest level, securing roles in all facets of the creative industry and achieving entrepreneurial success.”

CCAD provides a dedicated employability and enterprise support service for students and graduates, led by a team with a wide range of industrial experience across the creative sector.

Within the employability service, students and graduates receive assistance with jobs and work experience, further learning or setting up and running their own business, including one-to-one mentoring sessions, expert advice from sector specialists in areas such as marketing, finance, digital, networking opportunities and masterclasses.
