A SCHOOLDAY fit for a king or queen!
It was a right Royal affair at Throston Primary School, in Hartlepool, yesterday as hundreds of youngsters crowned the Diamond Jubilee with their own classroom celebrations.
Passers-by would have had to do a double take as children ditched the school uniform for the day and instead dressed as royalty.
And it wasn’t just the youngsters who spent the day in tunics and crowns, as staff joined in with the fun as well.
Children of all ages at the school, in Flint Walk, took part in a number of royalty-themed activities to kick start a year of Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
And just when they thought the fun and games were over for the day, the youngsters were treated to a visit by the Queen herself – or maybe a teacher dressed up – just before home-time.
The day was organised by staff to mark the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne.
Mark Atkinson, the school’s headteacher, said: “All of the main jubilee celebrations will be taking place throughout the summer when the children are off school so we thought yesterday was the perfect opportunity to do something in school.
“All of the children and the staff dressed up for the day, it looked fantastic.”
Coinciding with the school’s art week, children from reception to Year 6 got to work on portraits of the Queen throughout the years.
The school’s youngest children looked back to 1952 when the Queen took to the throne while the 10 and 11 year olds created a piece of art of the Queen as she is now.
Staff now plan to create a montage of the portraits throughout the school building.
After a busy morning in the classroom the youngsters gathered in the school hall for their ‘Queen’ visit.
The school’s Parent Teacher Association had bought hundreds of official Diamond Jubilee coins to mark the occasion and the commemorative coins were handed out to all of the children.
Youngsters also read a number of royalty-related books linking in nicely with a reading project they have been studying recently.
“It all tied in well,” added Mr Atkinson.
“The art work looks brilliant, we are looking forward to get that on display around the school and each year group was looking at a different royalty-themed book.
“We will have plenty of activities in school to mark the jubilee this year and this was an excellent way to get it all underway.”
The Queen’s 60 years as monarch are set to be marked by a number of events nationwide throughout 2012 culminating in a four-day long bank holiday weekend in June.
