STUDENTS are hoping to have a close shave with success when they take part in a national competition this weekend.
East Durham College students Maxine Walker, 26, and Orianne Million, 18, along with their lecturer Alison Scattergood, have beaten off stiff competition from hundreds of other entries from over 80 colleges to reach the finals of the 2014 Barber Connect Competitions.
The event is being held at The Celtic Manor Resort, in Wales, this Sunday.
Maxine and Orianne have qualified for the final 10 in their respective categories, with Maxine, of Trimdon, in the Men’s Styling category and Orianne, from Sedgefield, in the Trends category.
Not to be outdone by her prodigies, Alison has also bagged a place in the top four to compete in the Master’s category, which will see her go head-to-head with her rivals performing shaving patterns in a real boxing ring.
And to top off the individual success, East Durham College has also been nominated in the top three colleges for the Best Overall College category.
Alison said: “It’s an amazing achievement and a great event to be a part of, both for me and the students.
“Fingers crossed we come back with some good results and cap off what has been a fantastic year for the department.”
