A TEAM of young futsal players are celebrating after winning a national championship.
Female students from Hartlepool Sixth Form College, in Blakelock Road, travelled to Birmingham to take part in the National Futsal Championship and came away as triumphant winners.
Futsal is a fast-paced indoor format of football, played with a heavier ball to develop more skilful players and the small court also helps players develop close control.
Ben Robinson, the college’s director of sport, said: “The girls played three group games beating Henley College 5-1, Derby College 4-3 and Truro College 7-1. They then advanced to the semi-finals beating Bright Hove Albion 5-3 and then Barking Abbey School 8-2.
“Officials complimented them on how they played and their attitude towards the games. Each team member performed exceptionally with Becky Norman ‘pipping’ the rest to the player of the tournament with 10 goals in 5 games.”
The squad was made up of Brogan McHugh, Amy Cowan, Rebecca Norman, Emily Smith, Vanessa Goodrick, Georgia Readman, Megan Hammond, Emily Hammond and Kirsty Setchell and they are coached by Tom Heselton, sports scientist and Becky Robinson, sports tutor.
