A mature student has achieved outstanding results on her East Durham College course - passing her maths in half the time predicted by lecturers.
Tammy Mascarenhas, 35, from Trimdon, joined East Durham College in September 2014 to study on a functional skills course to further her maths and English skills.
During initial assessments, Tammy’s maths skills were judged not yet at the level required to join a GCSE course to progress in her chosen career; it was expected to take her two years to get to the required level.
But Tammy has proved to be an exceptional student, achieving her two-year goal in just over a year.
Staff have seen Tammy go for strength to strength, working non-stop to boost her maths skills to achieve her aim.
She is now joined a higher level teaching assistant course which will further develop her career in the education sector.
Tammy is really proud of her achievements since joining East Durham College and is excited to get started on her new course.
Tammy said: “When I joined this course at the college I knew I had a long way to go to get my maths skills up to the required standard.
“But I came into the course determined to improve and this determination along with the staff at the college, has helped me get through the course a lot quicker than expected.
“I am now looking forward to moving on to my new teaching assistant course to further my knowledge and help me to continue progressing my career.”
