CARE home residents were given beauty treatments as part of a national campaign.

Around a dozen residents at the Jack Dormand Care Home, in Horden, were treated to a pamper day during Dignity Action Day.

As part of the initiative, students from East Durham College, in Peterlee, gave the residents hand and head massages and the women also had their hair styled and make-overs.

The residents of the Fourth Street-based home, which was taken over by HC1 when former owner Southern Cross went bust, were also treated to a visit from children from the SureStart nursery at the village’s Cotsford Infant School.

The youngsters entertained the residents by singing nursery rhymes, which was greatly appreciated.

Dignity Action Day gives people a chance to contribute to upholding people’s rights to dignity and provide a memorable day for people receiving care.

It also aims to ensure people in care are treated as individuals, are given choice, control and a sense of purpose in their daily lives and provide stimulating activities.

Tracy Dixon, the home’s activities co-ordinator, said: “The residents thoroughly enjoyed the day, they were still talking about it for a long time afterwards.

“It showed you are never too old for a pampering treat. “Dignity in later life is our first and foremost priority and a built-in part of care.

“We strive to preserve people’s dignity on a daily basis, not just during this nationally-recognised annual event, and have dignity champions at the home.”
