A NEW nursery to help give children the best start in life has opened in Hartlepool.

Lynnfield Primary School held a grand opening for Leo’s Nursery which provides care for two-year-olds within Lynnfield Children’s Centre.

The open day was an opportunity for the community to see what the nursery has to offer for the first time.

The government has given £755 million to local councils nationally to provide 15 hours a week of free childcare to two-year-olds from September.

A spokesman for Lynnfield Primary School said: “We were overwhelmed by the response from the community at both the morning and afternoon sessions.

“It was pleasing to see the amount of children and parents who attended having fun together whilst carrying out the play activities on offer. “

The facility has been named after community stalwart Leo Ryan and is run from the Leo Ryan Suite. His granddaughter who visited said he would have been so proud that his room was being used to support young children.

It opened on Monday and can cater for 24 local children divided between morning and afternoon sessions. So far, 18 families have registered their youngsters.
