New college to create jobs

A NEW sixth form college is set to create a jobs boost when it opens later this year.

East Durham Sixth Form, known as ED6, will open at East Durham College, in Peterlee, in September.

The new centre, at the college’s £36m campus in Willerby Grove, needs to employ top A-Level teachers to deliver its curriculum of 21 A-Level subjects.

ED6 hopes to create the equivalent of 10 full-time posts in its first year, with this increasing when it takes on its second cohort of students in 2013.

The sixth form will be holding a recruitment and information evening for prospective staff from 5pm-7pm on Tuesday, February 7.

Head of ED6, Jacqui Lee, said: “East Durham Sixth Form has set its entry requirements for students higher than a number of other sixth forms in the region and will concentrate on quality rather than quantity.

“This quality also goes for the staff we will recruit too.

“They will need to be experienced, highly-qualified A-Level teachers – people with proven track records of delivering successful student A-Level passes.”

Full-time staff will be offered a Scale B salary of around £32,000 and Pathway Leader roles in maths and English will pay around £36,000.

Also as part of the package, there will be 45 days annual leave, pension, free parking, on-site childcare and free use of the gym.

Part-time hourly paid staff positions will receive a competitive £25 per hour.

Applicants will need a minimum of three years A-Level teaching experience, a postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE), a degree in a relevant subject to the one they’d like to teach and bags of passion.
