THE Olympic spirit came to town when a world famous torch was carried into a school.

A torch used during the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics was taken to St Joseph’s Primary School, in Hartlepool, by staff from Hartlepool Power Station.

They have the torch as part of a sponsorship deal between EDF and the 2012 Summer Olympics, which is set to be held in London.

Youngsters had the chance to learn about the torch and what it stands for although they could not light it for health and safety reasons.

Margaret Hodgson, headteacher at the Musgrave Walk school, said: “It was great having a piece of living history in the school and this will begin our own countdown to the Olympics next year.

“All the children had their photos taken with the torch and will be doing work about the games in the run up to the summer.

“We’ll also be holding our own Olympic-themed sports day so we will definitely be in the spirit of things.”
