PUPILS at Grange Primary School, in Hartlepool, are experts on Victorian times after spending hours studying in the classroom.

Callum Hagan, 10, said: “It’s been really good.

“It has been linked in to a lot of different subjects. Last week in design technology we made our own model Victorian houses in a shoebox.

“We had to design all of the different rooms, I really enjoyed that.”

Joel Dawson, 10, said: “I think the best part of the project so far has been making the shoeboxes but we have done lots of different activities.

“I have learned a lot about the subject and I think we have all enjoyed it.

“We have done lots of research and read books and used the internet.

“We watched a documentary as well which was good.”

Ben Hedley, 11, was surprised to find out about the quality of life for people in the Victorian times.

He said: “The rich people lived really good lives but the poor were treated very badly.

“They had to work really, really hard.

“Some children our age didn’t even have a home, I felt really sorry for them when we were learning about it.”

Tegan Hutchinson, 11, said: “I think learning the difference between the way the rich and the poor lived has been the most interesting part of the project so far.

“This is one of the only history projects we have done but I have really enjoyed it.

“I would like to learn about the Tudors and others as well.”

Evan Rowbotham, 11, said: “One of the first things we learned was about families and it’s so different to how it is now.

“We found out that a Queen married her cousin and they had nine kids, 40 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren.

“I couldn’t believe it when we were told about that.

“I was shocked at how the poor people had to live as well.

“They had a toilet in the back yard.”

Callum Legg, 11, said: “It’s been really fun learning about the Victorians.

“Maths used to be my favourite subject but I think history is now.

“I think some of the projects at secondary school will be very interesting.

“We have linked the project in with English, DT and other subjects, that has been very good.”
