MEET the new title-holder of a wacky Easter competition that is steeped in tradition.
Phil Raine has been crowned the 2012 World Egg Jarping Champion after beating off tough competition from 24 contestants.
Phil put in an eggs-tremely good display of skill to see off his fellow entrants in the event, which is now in its 30th year and took place at the Hearts of Oak pub, in Oakerside Drive, in Peterlee, on Easter Sunday.
Event organiser Roy Simpson said: “Phil won against all the odds and from a field of over 24 contestants.
“A great time was had by all and all cash raised will be donated to MacMillan Cancer Support.”
The Hartlepool Mail reported last week that pub bosses stepped in to hold the annual event, which is now in its 30th year, after the competition was called off last year after its previous venue, Peterlee Cricket and Social Club, was forced to close after being hit by fire in August 2010.
The pub ran its own version of the competition last year and Phil was the winner then, too.
The event, which involves participants “jarping” and “dunshing” each other’s eggs, has previously attracted people from as far as Brighton on the south coast.
Phil won a trophy and a certificate for his cracking efforts.
He takes the title from 2010 winner Dave Young, from Peterlee.
