Elderly couple rescued from house blaze

AN ELDERLY couple and a have-a-go hero were rescued by fire crews after a house blaze.

Fire crews rushed to the house just after midnight after receiving reports of the fire.

The elderly occupants, an 80-year-old man and his 75-year-old wife, were rescued along with a 35-year-old neighbour who had ran in to help the couple.

The couple were taken to the University Hospital of Hartlepool to be treated for smoke inhalation.

The neighbour was uninjured.

Three appliances battled the blaze, in Pentland Close, in Peterlee for around half an hour.
