AN energy company has become the latest impressive backer of an awards scheme.

EDF Energy, which owns Hartlepool’s nuclear power station, is putting its weight behind the Pride of Hartlepool competition.

Bosses say they are pleased to be a part of a contest which rewards the unsung heroes of the town.

It’s a competition which has already attracted dozens of entrants and received awards nominations from hundreds of people.

Simon Parsons, station director at Hartlepool power station, said: “I am delighted that we are part of this prestigious awards ceremony which recognises and rewards the community spirit of this great town.

“I am very proud of the team I have here at the station who not only are professional and dedicated in the workplace, but play a full part in their local community in a range of activities.”

Also on board are Niramax, Seneca, Specsavers, Gus Robinson Developments Ltd, Huntsman, and Housing Hartlepool.

What a line-up for a competition which has been a huge success already and looks set to continue in the same vein.

We have had more than 100 people put in nominations for their favourite causes but we still need more.

Ten categories up for grabs are Sporting Achievement; Community Group; Community Champion; Student of the Year; Fundraiser of the Year; Child of Courage; Local Hero; Green Champion; Emergency Services and Young Performer of the Year.

We are calling on our readers to nominate that special person or people who have done something that you believe deserves recognition.

It could be anyone from 999 heroes to community champions – help us celebrate those who have done their town proud.

You have until early March to put forward your favourites. After that, the judges will meet to draw up a shortlist before the competition’s grand finale - an awards night in April.

We want to make this a record year for entry numbers but the only way we can do that is with your help.

Fill in the nomination form in the Hartlepool Mail, or visit and complete the online entry form.

You can ensure that the people who make Hartlepool proud are the ones who get the praise they deserve.
