Parks are sitting pretty after scooping a clutch of national awards for being the best.

Green Flags are presented by Keep Britain Tidy to award those who boast the highest possible standards, are beautifully maintained and have excellent facilities.

Ward Jackson Park and Summerhill Country Park, in Hartlepool, have both collected flags to fly thanks to the work of Hartlepool Borough Council.

They join Horden Welfare Park and Horden Memorial Park, which are maintained by the village’s parish council, and the Durham County Council-run Hardwick Park, Sedgefield, and the Hurworth Burn to Station Town railway path.

Councillor Marjorie James, chairman of Hartlepool Council’s neighbourhood services policy committee, said: “Credit must go to everyone who contributes to its success, both the council staff who work there on a day-to-day basis and the many volunteers.”
