A FOOTBALL star who has been working as an ambassador for the European game came back to where his “dream started”.
Hartlepool United football legend John McGovern came back to Hartlepool yesterday ahead of a big weekend that will see him working for UEFA in Germany for the Bayern Munich v Chelsea Champions League final.
John, a twice European Cup winning captain for Nottingham Forest, said: “It’s great being back in town and seeing all the really positive changes.
“We nipped down to the marina and had good old fish and chips.
“This was the place where my dream started and I always look for Pools’ result every week. It was the club and town that opened the door to a glorious career for me. It has brought so many great memories back for me, like biking it from the Central Estate to the Vic for training every day.”
McGovern was just 16 when he was given his Pools debut by Brian Clough and went on to be part of a history making promotion team that went up to Division Three.
On Saturday evening the ex-Pools great will welcome VIPS, officials and sponsors from around the world to the big game in Munich and recount the tale of how his career started at the Vic.
John is now an after dinner speaker, pundit for the BBC in Nottingham and works for Forest as club ambassador.
He was in Hartlepool to discuss with town-based publicist Paul Gough, of Goffy Media, his plans for the release of his book that is scheduled for later this year.
