Fitness enthusiasts are being invited to take on Mother Nature when an extreme event comes to the North East.

No Ego Challenge is set to arrive in the forest and trails of Hamsterley, in County Durham, on Saturday, March 28.

The Hamsterley ‘Conquer The Forest’ 10km and 10 mile runs will be the first in a series of events planned for runners take on tough terrain in 2015. The firm also organises Mud Challenge events (such as the one in the YouTube video on this page).

A spokesman for the event said: “No Ego Head Torch races are fun and challenging but don’t forget your sense of humour – you will get dirty.

“Unlike our Mud/Obstacles races at Penrith and Preston, this is not an obstacle race, apart from ducking to miss branches, avoiding tree roots, running down steep descents, and of course the weather. This will be a trail race to challenge both beginners and experiences runners through a 2000 hectare oasis, sprawling along the sides of a sheltered valley.

“It’s a great event to challenge your body, get out with friends and experience some of the best forest scenery the North East can offer.”

Competitors will include both top level athletes and first-time trail runners looking to improve their fitness and to try something new.

The spokesman added: “These races are not designed to get you crawling through mud, or jumping into rivers. The aim is to entice people of all fitness levels to leave the comfort of their treadmills and see what the beautiful scenery of County Durham has to offer. The course will take you away from the start onto fire roads, single track paths, fire breaks, narrow tree breaks, mud bogs and through the toughest areas Hamsterley has to offer.”

This event starts at 10.40am for the 10-mile and 11.05am for the 10km.

The entry cost is £22 for either the 10km or 10 mile event and the minimum age for entrants is 16 years old. A parent must be present at registration to sign a waiver for under 18 year olds. Enter online at www.noegochallenge.com.
