ENGLAND fans packed out Hartlepool pubs to cheer on the team in their first World Cup match against Italy.
Supporters were left to drown their sorrows after the Three Lions lost 2-1 in the frustrating game in Manaus.
The Mail joined fans at The Park Inn to watch the game that was full of highs and lows.
Around 200 fans filled the Park Road pub’s two bars and crowded round big screens.
After England went behind to Claudio Marchisio’s 25-yard opening goal the place went crazy when England hit back less than two minutes later thanks to Daniel Sturridge.
But disappointment was to follow after ex-Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli scored the winning goal.
Deflated fan Matthew Brown, 27, who watched the game in the pub, said: “The passion was there, we just got undone. We gave away two easy set pieces.”
Rik Hanlon, landlord of The Park Inn, said: “Tonight has gone really well despite the result.
“It has been a great atmosphere. Roll on Thursday.”
Costa Rica are currently top of Group D after a surprise 3-1 win over Uruguay, who England face next.
