A TRIO of top fast food workers are gearing up to represent Hartlepool this summer at the biggest sporting event in the world.
McDonald’s staff Rhianon Horton, Shell Watson and Charlotte Stevens will help serve thousands of visitors and athletes from across the globe after being selected to work at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The trio are among a 2,000-strong squad of McDonald’s staff chosen from a pool of 87,000 after a rigorous test of their speed, customer service and ability to work as part of a team.
They beat off competition from other staff in Hartlepool and will be working six-hour shifts in and around the Olympic Park at four temporary McDonald restaurants.
While the world’s finest athletes work their socks off on the track, the trio will be doing their bit helping to serve an estimated 1.75m meals in 29 days to 9.7m spectators, a work force of 200,000 and 17,000 athletes plus team officials.
A delighted Rhianon, 19, from the Throston area of town, is a customer care assistant and is looking forward to the challenge.
She said: “This a fantastic opportunity and I was delighted to have been selected.
“The Olympic Games is a massive event and it will be an honour to be working there.
“It is definitely going to be a big challenge as there will be so many people.
“But I am looking forward to it and it is a great chance to meet new people and we also get tickets for some of the events.”
Rhianon has worked for McDonald’s for the past two years and is currently studying sport at Hartlepool College of Further Education.
She added: “I am really interested in sport so I cannot wait to be in and around the Olympic Park and hopefully I will spot a few famous faces.”
The 19-year-old will be in London between July 26 and August 2 working at the Olympic Games while colleagues Shell, 21, and Charlotte, 20, who are both crew members, will be working at the Paralympic Games in late August.
They will each spend between a week and 10 days at their nominated restaurant and stay in the capital at a top four-star hotel.
Each will receive a free mobile phone and get complimentary tickets to some of the Olympic and Paralympic events.
All three work at the McDonald’s, off Marina Way, in Hartlepool.
Bev Williamson, business manager at the restaurant, said: “This is a real honour for the three staff members and I am over the moon they were selected.
“They had to go through a tough test to ensure they were up to the challenge.
“It is a great chance to meet new people while working at a huge event.
“This is a fantastic opportunity and we wish them well.”
