FIREFIGHTERS were called to a police headquarters following an explosion in the building.

Durham Police reported a “small explosion” at its Aykley Heads offices in Durham City in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

Fire crews tackled a blaze and are still at the scene, a police spokesman said this morning.

No-one was injured in the blast, which was believed to have been caused by a lithium battery overheating.

The fire, which left a ground floor battery room and workshop severely damaged, was put out by 11.22am.

Office accommodation on the floor above suffered moderate smoke damage, said a fire service spokesman.
