Fire fighters from Hartlepool received a Christmas Day call-out to tackle a recycling tip blaze.

Officers from the town’s Stranton Fire station joined crews from Billingham, Stockton and Thornaby in battling a fire at the Impetus recycling tip, in Seal Sands Road, in Billingham.

Crews were called out at 9.56am this morning and remained at the site for over two hours.

A large quantity of recycled rubbish was destroyed in the fire.

Household rubbish in the warehouse of the recycling site had self-ignited after heating up due to being piled up close together.

No structural damage was caused to the warehouse.
