FIRE chiefs have asked residents to inform them when they are due to have garden fires in a bid to save resources.
The appeal comes from Peterlee Fire Station following two incidents of controlled burning which led to crews rushing to the scene.
But their services were not needed after it emerged the residents in both incidents were present and having their own bonfires.
The first incident happened in Dene Avenue, in Shotton Colliery, around 5.50pm on Sunday and the second took place in the back garden of a property in Wellfield Road, Wingate, around 9.05pm, also on Sunday.
A station spokesman said: “We would appeal for people who are planning to have their own garden fires to contact us first to let us know, so other people in the area don’t call us thinking it is an emergency.”
