A CAFE is celebrating after securing top marks in a food hygiene scheme.
Eugene’s cafe, in Park Road, Hartlepool, has maintained its 5* rating and high standards despite moving into new premises in recent months.
The popular town cafe, well-known for its frothy coffee, used to be located at the back of the old Westgate’s store, in Hartlepool’s Middleton Grange Shopping Centre, but closed its doors to customers in September last year due to financial problems of re-locating the business to the other end of the complex. The cafe is now based in the former Gillen’s Sports Bar building after a £250,000 facelift and inspectors have given the business a 5* hygiene rating after a recent visit.
Hartlepool Borough Council is part of the national Food Hygiene Rating Scheme (FHRS) which aims to give residents information and keep them informed about hygiene levels at businesses selling food. The Downes family, which run the business, say they are delighted to retain their top rating.
Martin Downes, whose daughter Andrea Downes runs Eugene’s cafe, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have retained our 5* rating for hygiene and that is down to the hardwork of all the staff.”
