METAL thieves have struck at a council depot and made off with a pair of gates.
Police are investigating after crooks targeted the site off Brenda Road, in Hartlepool, which is opposite Tata Steel.
Two pieces of heavy metal, which are around 17ft-long each, were stolen between 4.30pm on Thursday, July 19, and 9am the next day.
A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: “If anybody has seen the gates or any suspicious vehicles in the area at the time, please pass on the information.”
Hartlepool Police have been taking part in Operation Tornado to target metal thieves and to make it harder for them to weigh in stolen metal at scrapyards.
The town had been hit by a spate of thefts of items such as lead from roofs and manhole covers.
But night-time police patrols, officers being posted on the gates of scrapyards and tighter controls on scrap dealers has seen the crimewave fall.
