AN organisation has been set up to help disadvantaged communities prosper through sport. Sported is a regional scheme that provides services to build sustainability with community organisations using sport to deliver vital life skills to young people aged 11 to 25.
The scheme was rolled out to deliver services in the Tees Valley and east Durham in November, following an initial launch in Tyne and Wear.
During those early months seven projects were successful in their applications for Sported mentor support, resulting in matches with volunteer business mentors to help them in developing their long term sustainability.
A small grants scheme was also launched and applications have been rolling in.
Regional manager Sandra Hillyard said: “Last year was a great start to our work in the North-East with many groups starting to benefit from the resources and support offered by Sported to bolster the business side of their operation.
“We have also built links with a range of partners including Tony Blair Sport Foundation, and a range of voluntary development agencies and funders across the region.”
