A GRANDPARENTS support group is appealing for new members to join it.

Grandparents Together was set up about five years ago and is run by two husband and wife teams Janet and Richard Rudd, and Barbara and Frank Gallen.

Both couples have something in common, in that they both took on and are bringing up their grandchildren.

So the fab foursome meet every Friday in the Chatham Road Children’s Centre, in Chatham Road, Hartlepool, along with about 12 other grandparents who live with their childrens’ children to let off steam about the different issues they face and to use each other as a therapy.

The group also fundraises to help pay for the cost of taking their grandchildren on days out, and provides information on social services and benefits help.

Mum-of-four and grandmother-of-eight Janet, 51, who works part-time in the laundry of TMD Friction, in Oakesway Industrial Estate, Hartlepool, said: “We took on four grandchildren and that was our inspiration really.

“We wanted to create a group where people who have taken on their grandchildren could come along and support each other with different issues they face.

“Somebody might say they’ve had a bad week for whatever reason and it helps to hear someone else might have had the same problem. It started off with about three or four of us but now there’s about 12. If we have problems with the children we share them and we try to do fundraising as well and the money we raise we put towards days out for the children.”

She added: “We are all there for each other and the kids end up being there for each other too. It’s open for anybody, It’s just a drop in and if you want to talk you can talk, if you just want to listen you can listen.” Anyone who would like to join the group should drop in on Fridays between 10am to 12pm or telephone (01429) 294154.
