PENSIONERS are being urged to back a campaign calling for the appointment of a minister dedicated to the needs of older people.

The Grey Pride campaign has secured a House of Commons debate following the handover of a 137,000- strong petition to Parliament last year.

Housing and care provider Anchor, who supported the campaign, are now urging people to back the campaign and calling for MPs to turn up and vote for the motion.

The debate will take place next Thursday, June 28.

Chris Wood, scheme manager of Anchor’s Derwent Grange retirement housing, in Clearpool Close, Hartlepool, said: “We are delighted that this debate has been schedules and now urge MPs to listen to the 137,000 people who signed our petition and vote in favour of the motion next week.

“Older people’s issues have never before ridden so high on the political agenda, yet this country’s elderly population often feels invisible to MPs, their concerns ignored and their needs overlooked.

“It’s time we gave this nation’s older people the respect and representation they deserve.”
