‘Grope’ charge denied

A MAN accused of groping two women on a night out has denied ever touching them.

Gavin Travis, 42, is alleged to have put his hand up two women’s skirts after leaving a nightspot in Hartlepool.

Travis strenuously denied the allegations at Teesside Crown Court, where he is standing trial on charges of sexual assault and sexual assault by penetration.

He admitted he had engaged in banter with a group of women, but denied touching any of them.

Alexia Zimbler, defending, asked him whether he had touched any of the women and he replied: “No”.

Travis, of Grange Road, said he had drank about six pints plus bottles of beer that night.

He was arrested after one of the women’s husband’s followed a taxi carrying Travis until it stopped.

Yesterday, a woman who was out with the alleged victims said she saw Travis with his hand up the dresses of the women.

She said: “I pushed him away I think I called him a perv.”

The jury was told that DNA tests from Travis’ fingerprints came back negative.

The trial continues.
