A PERSONAL trainer has opened a new gym – and puts it down to the success of a Hartlepool Mail-backed fitness challenge.

Steven Smith was the man who helped a dozen out-of-shape contestants to get healthy in our recently ended Weigh Forward challenge.

Now he’s opened a new gym The Body Doctors, in Cromwell Street.

He told the Mail: “After what happened with Weigh Forward, things have taken off.”

The publicity has led to 25 people signing up for the boot camps being held by Steven who has in the past based much of his personal training sessions in outdoor locations around town.

Steven added: “There was no way I could do that in this weather so I thought it was best to get my own place.”

Steven officially opened the premises yesterday with a helping hand from Eddie Ellwood, a town gym owner.

Our competition was run in conjunction with Tavistock Leisure and Steven Smith.

It eventually saw 33-year-old Philip Bentham crowned as the champion after he lost three stone and went from 16st 8lb to 13st 8lb, with Gemma Horsley, 30, as runner-up after slimming from 13st to 11st 4lb.

There was just a pound between Gemma and third place which went to Jean Leonard, 59, who went from 14st 1lb to 12st 6lb, losing 1st 9lbs.

Philip picked up the top prize of two months’ personal training with Steven and an overnight hotel stay.

Gemma picked up the runners-up prize of a month of personal training with Steven.
